Painting Substrates - Acrylics & Oils 2 - Canvas Boards

Oct 25, 2019

Previously we discussed, thepre cut sheets of canvas or linen as substrates for Oil and Acrylic paintings.

Today I intend to tackle the pre primed commercially available Canvas or Linen board panels.

These are sheets of canvas or linen wrapped or glued over a cardboard like surface, folded at the back and sealed. All the materials however have to be archival to offer longevity to the paintings.

The advantage of these panels is that they are thin (0.2") and lightweight, which, is immensely useful for on location  (En plein air) paintings where one has to carry all the painting gear and hike with them for varying distances.

The Thickness Of The Panel, Barely 0.2 Inches Is Very Convenient.

They also come in various sizes and surface materials as shown below.

Canvas Boards In Various Standard Sizes And Materials

The biggest disadvantages of these panels, especially the larger ones where the length exceeds 12 inches is the tendency of the panels to warp when paint is applied to the surface. Also they will not last in moist or humid conditions as eventually they will wick in enough moisture that they will disintegrate.

The Image below, " The Lake Cottage" is an example of an acrylic painting on a canvas board.
