2000 - Uni Nats, Ottawa - Bull, 9th

My very first UniNats! What a great experience. Being new to Canada, new to Edmonton, new to the UofA, and relatively new to ulti, it was awesome how by playing with the club I was instantly propelled into a huge group of really good friends (most of which continue to be very good friends to this day). So, from a social perspective, UniNats 2000 in Ottawa was amazing. And from a competitive/results perspective, this could have been the tourney where the UofA men’s team started to take some steps towards being a powerhouse in the University Ultimate scene. For example, this tournament marked the beginning of our 4 year long domination of Queens (except for one minor hiccup in 2002) with 2 wins over the Golden Gaels. We were also up on McMaster (the eventual champion) by a score of 9-7 before losing 11-9 (11-10?). Unfortunately in that game I dropped a pass in the endzone that would have put us up 10-8. That memory will forever haunt me… We also lost to a very unspirited UBC team lead by the troll. My first of many experiences with how those boys like to play. I believe we ended up in 9th (or 7th?) place. From what I understand, it was quite an improvement from the year before and foreshadowed a good future for UofA Bull.
The tourney was also marked by several non-game related highlights including Adam Richardson nailing Keld in the face with a mile high blade while Keld was trying to catch some shut eye before the finals. Equally as hilarious was when Tyler Spence shattered his “indestructible” Nalgene by launching it onto some concrete. And smushing ourselves into Keld’s and Duncan Kenyon’ s teeny apartments was very good for team bonding.
