Project Description:

My current main project is the House River Fire Project (for details, click here). The aims are to study the effects of fire severity and post-fire logging on dead-wood dependent and ground-dwelling beetles, forest birds (especially woodpeckers) and field-layer vegetation at different spatial scales. An additional purpose is to compare the responses of the focal taxa on fire and harvesting, and on forest structural elements. We co-operate with Alberta-Pacific Forest Industries, Alberta Research Council, and Canadian Wildlife Service. Apart from forests and fire, I am also interested in various aspects of urbanization, especially roads. Regarding urbanization studies in Alberta, I have studied edge and trampling effects on vascular plants and ground beetles in Aspen-dominated recreational-use forests (the ET project). Currently I am preparing a bunch of manuscripts on earlier road studies that have been carried out in Finland and in the Netherlands. My earlier studies, including the MSc and PhD projects, have mostly been on ground beetles and different aspects of forestry. However, I have also carried out tens of bird, vegetation and insect censuses for various consultants and other researchers since 1982. Since 2001, I have acted as an Editor for the peer-reviewed journal Entomologica Fennica.
