Education Days hosted by the Kidney Supportive Care Research Group

Providing Knowledge and Tools to Deliver Comprehensive Care

Dr. Sara Davison and her team received a three year grant to develop a Provincial Conservative Kidney Management (CKM) Pathway to provide sustainable, high-quality, evidence-based care for patients unlikely to benefit from dialysis. Implementation of the pathway was piloted in four Chronic Kidney Disease Clinics in the Northern Alberta Renal Program. To help successfully implement the pathway the Kidney Supportive Care Research Group, in partnership with the Kidney Health Strategic Clinical NetworkTM, hosted education sessions.

Participants from the Conservative Kidney Management (CKM) Pathway pilot sites,  and healthcare professionals from a variety of care settings attended these sessions. These workshops were also open to those patients, family members, and community care providers interested in learning more about conservative kidney management. Education was provided on the following topics:

Clinical Pathway Training

Date: Sept 13, 2016

This 1-day education session provided an overview of the key concepts of Conservative Kidney Management including Chronic Kidney Disease and symptom management guidelines, and community and palliative home care resources. Participants also had an opportunity to practice navigating the CKMcare.com website using authentic case studies.

Advanced Care Planning Competency Training

Date: Feb 10, 2017

This half-day session included competency-based skills training to engage with patients in crucial Advance Care Planning conversations. Role playing exercises were integrated into the training session to give participants the opportunity to develop their communication skills for advance care planning; not be assessed on the skills.

Patient Decision Aid

Date: Feb 10, 2017

This short session included an introduction and demonstration of the draft Patient Decision Aid tool to gather feedback and engaged stakeholders in a brainstorming session about how to better support getting the right patients on the right pathway.
