Plans and Documents of
Commercial Solid Model Kits

Updated: 22 April 2004

Welcome to this very under construction page. With luck it will remain so for some time, as we receive more copies of plans to fill all of the empty spots. Soon I am going to have to organize this lot better, as it is becoming a little unwieldly, but I'm going under the impression that half of the fun is in the hunt :-)

Currently, I am simply posting some examples for you to look at, and with luck, to try and build. At the moment, all of the plans presented are copies of copies. As such they are fine for looking at and for casual building but I am afraid that, like a mutt's parents, I cannot vouch for their authenticity, particularly of size. In time I hope to formulate a system by which the plans may be rated, with higher resolution scans available of those plans rated nearest to original condition.

Hawk Plan drawn by Phil Mates 1934 kindly donated by Pat C.

Completed Laird Solution by Ken Horne.
So for the time being, I'd like to present this little collection to wet your appetite. For one last time (I promise) I'll appeal to the generosity of anyone in possession of kit plans (original or copy) to contact me. It is my sincere belief that the availability of a great variety of plans will do wonders to educate and promote this important yet little spoken of element of model aircraft history.

WANTED: copies of KIT plans of the '30s & '40s.

Pictures of completed models or any other information or recollection would be most appreciated.

This group of drawings have come to us through the kind donations of Cliff S. A Member of Solid Model Memories, and fellow Canadian, Cliff has sent us this wonderful little collection of Canadian model plans. Though they represent the lower range of the Dime Scale quality, they are alive, or at least once were, in the hands of a young prairie boy. All these years later, you can read the notations scrawled on the pages and the pencil outlines where he once carbon copied the plan to balsa block. It helps remind me that this is not simply cold historical research, but challenge, excitement, and fun through the eyes of a boy. Thanks for everything Cliff.
