I am an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the
University of Alberta. I am a Professional Engineer licensed in Alberta, British Columbia, and the
State of Texas. I am also a certified Project Management Professional (PMP) and a LEED Green
Associate.
I have more than 25 years of combined academic and industry experience in structural engineering and
construction in Canada and internationally. I lead the Advanced Resilient Infrastructure &
Sustainable Engineering (ARISE) Research Team, where our research integrates experimental testing,
numerical simulation, and analytical modelling to improve the performance, resilience, and
sustainability of buildings and infrastructure.
My research interests include performance-based seismic design; performance assessment of steel,
mass-timber, and hybrid structural systems; seismic energy-dissipation devices; evaluation of
structural robustness and practical methods for mitigating progressive collapse; infrastructure
assessment and rehabilitation; and sustainable and affordable modular construction.
My experimental work is conducted at the I.F. Morrison Structures Laboratory and includes full-scale
testing of pipelines, steel and timber connections, structural components, and assemblies under
extreme loading conditions. Our team also develops computational and machine-learning tools for
structural design, performance assessment, system optimization, and the design automation of
resilient and sustainable structural systems.
At the University of Alberta, I am an associate faculty member of the Advanced Research in Timber
Systems (ARTS) Group and The Steel Centre. I contribute to the development of Canadian structural
design standards and building-code provisions through my involvement with several CSA O86 technical
task groups and other technical committees. I also collaborate with government agencies,
municipalities, industry partners, and academic researchers to translate research findings into
practical engineering solutions and advance the development of resilient, sustainable, and
affordable infrastructure.
