I welcome expressions of interest from motivated students and researchers who are interested in joining our research team. Our work spans structural and infrastructure engineering, with research areas including, but not limited to, structural performance under extreme loading conditions, performance-based seismic design and assessment, timber, steel, mass-timber, and hybrid structural systems, lateral load-resisting systems, pipeline engineering, sustainable and affordable construction, life-cycle assessment, and data-driven approaches including machine learning, data analytics, and research-oriented software development.
Examples of current and recent research projects are provided on this website. Prospective team members are encouraged to review these projects to become familiar with our research activities and identify areas that align with their interests and experience.
The forms below are Expressions of Interest (EOI), not formal applications for admission or employment. They provide an opportunity to introduce yourself, share your background and research interests, and indicate your interest in potential opportunities within the research team. Submission of an EOI does not guarantee a position, funding, admission, or an interview. Candidates whose backgrounds and interests align with available or upcoming opportunities may be contacted for further discussion.
Our research team values a respectful, inclusive, and collaborative environment in which different perspectives, experiences, backgrounds, and ideas strengthen our research and its impact. Everyone who is interested in our research is welcome and encouraged to submit an Expression of Interest. We particularly encourage interest from individuals from groups that have historically been underrepresented in engineering and research. Selection of team members is based on research interests, qualifications, potential, and alignment with available research opportunities.
Please use the appropriate form below to tell us about your background, interests, and the type of opportunity you are seeking. A CV/resume and a brief description of your research interests are encouraged.
These forms are used to identify potential candidates for current and future opportunities. If there is a suitable match with an available project, you may be contacted to discuss the opportunity and, where applicable, the subsequent formal application process.
Undergraduate and M.Eng. students interested in gaining meaningful research experience are encouraged to submit an Expression of Interest.
For B.Sc. students, opportunities may include summer research positions, co-op/work terms, research assistantships, and other project-based research experiences. Depending on the project, students may become involved in laboratory testing, structural modelling and analysis, programming and software development, data analysis, literature reviews, sustainability studies, or other aspects of ongoing research.
Students are encouraged to review the sample projects posted on this website and indicate the research areas or projects that particularly interest them.
Submit using this Google FormProspective Masters students interested in research-based graduate studies are welcome to submit an Expression of Interest. Potential research areas include resilient and sustainable structural systems, extreme loading, timber and hybrid construction, structural performance and assessment, pipeline engineering, computational methods, and data-driven engineering.
The form is intended to help identify potential matches between prospective students and current or upcoming research projects. It is not a formal application to the University of Alberta's graduate program.
Submit using this Google FormProspective Ph.D. students are invited to submit an Expression of Interest if their research interests align with our group's ongoing or planned programs.
Areas of particular interest include performance-based design and assessment, seismic resilience, mass-timber and hybrid structural systems, structural robustness, sustainable and resilient infrastructure, computational modelling, machine learning, and design automation.
Applicants are encouraged to review the sample research projects on this website and identify areas that best align with their background and research interests. The EOI is an initial step for exploring potential research opportunities and does not constitute a formal application for admission.
Submit using this Google FormResearchers interested in joining the team as postdoctoral fellows or visiting scholars are welcome to submit an Expression of Interest. Opportunities may involve experimental, computational, and analytical research in structural and infrastructure engineering, sustainable construction, advanced structural systems, and data-driven engineering, often at the interface of academic research and industry applications.
Prospective researchers are encouraged to identify the research themes or sample projects that most closely align with their expertise and proposed research direction.
