Student Resources

We understand that navigating the academic world can feel a bit daunting, but we are here to help and support you. The student resources are a way for you to have access to common questions, along with some tips and tricks to help make your experience in the MDP program the best it can be!

Tips on preparing a strong application package

Here are some quick tips to help you application stand out when you are applying for the program.

Make your goals clear

Describe in the Personal Statement your motivation to apply to the MDP program, and how MDP would help you achieve your career objectives.

Highlight experience

Experiences on work, internships, research projects, extracurricular activities are considered favourably during the application reviews. Highlight these experiences in your Personal Statement. Ask a reference to describe your performances during work or a project.

Include all relevant courses

Online courses related to Data Science are considered a plus. Include certificates of completion for relevant online courses in your application.

Ensure your transcript is official

To avoid delay in the admission process, pay special attention to the requirements of official transcripts as outlined on the FGPS website. If you graduated from an institution a few years ago, the transcript issued to you at your graduation will NOT be considered official. Request a new copy of your transcript before you apply so that the transcript will have a recent date of issue.

When will I be able to schedule my courses for my first term?

You should receive an email with instructions when course selection becomes available. You should also log into your Beartracks account and try to register for the classes you want to take as soon as possible. You can login to your University of Alberta Beartracks account here: https://www.beartracks.ualberta.ca/ . (You should receive your CCID and login instructions in your acceptance package.)

May I switch to another course-based program after I am admitted to the MDP program?

Because each specialization program has its unique set of requirements, admission to one specialization program does not guarantee acceptance to another. Students wishing to explore other directions that are better fits to their interest and career objectives are encouraged to discuss their options with MDP faculty mentors, and also discuss their suitability for admission with faculty members in the targeted specialization program.

Peer Support Resources

Past and current students have been compiling a website to share their experiences, provide your examples of capstone projects and create a pool of support that you can use to make your experiences even better.
