While you study in Granada, you do not need to pay tuition at the U of A. However, to maintain your registration status at the U of A, it is crucial that you comply with the following U of A requirements.

First, consult with the Granada Program Coordinator, Dr. Marisa Bortolussi (marisa.bortolussi@ualberta.ca). Then:

1) First you need to obtain a Permission to Participate” form. You can obtain the form on the Horizons site (https://ualberta-horizons.symplicity.com/index.php?s=home&au=&ck=).

2) Bring the Permission to Participate form to your Faculty. Your Faculty will verify that you have the required minimal GPA to participate in a study abroad program, and will do a program check for you. NB students will soon be able to complete program checks by themselves on-line.

3) Once you have your Faculty’s approval, submit your application to the U of G. The application process if very simple; you can apply on-line. Application forms can be found on the Centro de Lengua Moderna’s website. The CEH application form can be found at:
https://www.clm-granada.com/en/esp/ceh.html
(bottom of page, under “Registration Forms”, it’s the 1st form).

For the CILE program, you can find the Registration form here:
https://www.clm-granada.com/en/esp/cile.html
((bottom of page, under “Registration Forms”, it’s the 1st form).

4) The U of A needs to keep track of its students abroad. So once you know for sure you will be going to Granada, register on the university’s AbroadGo Travel Registry. You can register on-line at: https://sites.ualberta.ca/~mbortolu/granada/styled-4/index.html

5) You must register in ABROAD 800 if: i) you need to remain eligible to receive loans, ii) if you plan to study 2 semesters in Granada, or iii) you would like this course to appear on your transcript. There is a fee of approximately $250. for ABROAD 800. Ask your Faculty about this requirement if you think it applies to you.

6) The government of Canada has a registry for tracking Canadians abroad; it’s a very good idea to sign up at: https://www.voyage2.gc.ca/Registration_inscription/Register_Inscrire/Login_ouvrir-une-session-eng.aspx?fwd=true&hash=p0V4sJhYtXNnDsAOImpW8w6161

7) VISA: If you plan to be abroad more than 90 days, you will need a Visa. Therefore it is important to start planning early. It is recommended that for the Fall semester, you begin the process no later than April 1, and for the Winter semester, Oct. 1.

8) *New requirement: to obtain transfer credit, students must register in an Education Abroad Pre-Departure session. Ask about dates when you’re at the Education Abroad office.

To apply for a Visa, you will need proof of registration from the University of Granada.

Here are 2 sources of information for you; the first is a Government of Canada source, the second has been kindly provided by a student who has been to Granada and has gone through this process:

Canadian citizens travelling to Spain must acquire a visa for periods over 90 days.
Normally, a visa application must submitted in person; however, the Spanish Embassy in Canada that deals with visa applications is located in Toronto, so they will also accept applications by mail. That is, in order to receive your visa, you must send all documents (including your PASSPORT, not a copy) to Ontario, with a return envelope so that everything may be sent back to you. The embassy will not use third party couriers to send you your visa. You may send your documents to them using whichever method you like, but they will
only send your documents (including the visa) to you using CANADA POST. Be sure to include a CANADA POST return envelope (ideally with a tracking number)!

Visa applications will not be processed any more than 90 days prior to the departure date, but this does not mean that later is better. The safest bet is to send everything off as early as possible so that it may be processed and returned to you.

The application form to be completed can be found here http://www.exteriores.gob.es/Embajadas/OTTAWA/es/Embajada/Paginas/HorariosLocalizacionContacto.aspx
There is a section on the application form in which you must specify what your address will be during your stay in Spain. If you are unsure of what this will be (for example, you want to rent a piso but not until you see it in real life), reserve a hotel for the first week or so of your stay. Mark the hotel’s address in the space where your permanent address in Spain would go.

Include a copy of the reservation confirmation and specify on the form that you will use this period of time to secure more permanent lodging. This way, you can send your application in before your housing is confirmed.
*This last one isn’t visa related, but try to be aware of any Spanish holidays (ex. Semana Santa) that may affect your accommodations/travel plans!
