Hopak is the most popular Ukrainian staged dance, featuring group sections and virtuosic solos.
Here children from a Ukrainian dance school in Brazil perform the choreography more or less as set by their teachers. The dance is presented as an example of an “art dance” because the choreographers intended the piece to look beautiful, and the audience appreciated it as an aesthetic experience. In this case, the dominant aesthetic values are ethnic identification (Ukrainians are a minority group in Brazil with some 120 years heritage in the new country), nostalgia, and family pride. It is beautiful indeed!
