Courses in Library and Information Studies


The matters dealt with below are subject to continuing review. MLIS Courses

The following courses are normally restricted to MLlS students and may not be offered each year. Interested students should contact the School of Library and Information Studies for scheduling information.

The following courses are required for both the thesis and course-based routes of the MLlS program and are normally prerequisites to the rest of the program: LIS 501, 502, 503, 504, 505, and 506.

 The following Education courses are also available as part of the MLlS program: EDAL 547, EDES 540, 541, 543, 546, 547, and EDIT 535.
 

LIS 501--Introduction to Library and Information Studies
An introduction to the historical, current, and potential roles of library and information professionals in western society. Introduces the study of environmental factors affecting library and information services. Economic, social, legal, political, technological and professional factors will be examined. Required course. Pre-requisite: none
LIS 502--Organization of Knowledge and Information
An introduction to the organization of knowledge and information, including bibliographic control, classification, indexing, and abstracting. Required course. Pre- or co-requisite: LIS 501
LIS 503--Introduction to Reference Services and Resources
An introduction to the functions of information services programs, an examination of policies designed to build materials collections in support of such programs, and an opportunity to become familiar with examples of major reference/information sources. Required course. Pre- or co-requisite: LIS 501
LIS 504--Management Principles for Library and Information Services
An introduction to principles of management applicable to the organization of library and information services. Required course. Pre-requisite: LIS 501
LIS 505--Research Methods for Library and Information Studies
An introduction to the nature of research and to the methodologies and techniques used in library and information studies. Required course. Pre-requisite: LIS 501
LIS 506--Introduction to Automation and Bibliographic Information
An introduction to automation and its implications for libraries and information services. Required course. Pre- or co-requisite: LIS 501
LIS 510--Storytelling
The past and present forms of storytelling, including the oral tradition, the function of the storyteller, the selection of material and the techniques of telling stories and listening to stories. Pre- or co-requisite: LIS 501
LIS 511--Materials for Adults
The recreational, educational and professional library and information needs of adults (including the less specialized needs of the high school, college and university communities), and the materials available to meet the needs. Pre-requisite: LIS 501, 502, 503
LIS 512--Information Resources for Academic Disciplines
An interdisciplinary approach to the selection, organization and use of library and information resources to support research and learning in an academic environment. Emphasis is on the nature and function of library and information resources, scholarly communication patterns and information seeking behaviours. Pre-requisite: LIS 501, 502, 503, 506
LIS 515--Materials for Young Adults
Materials for young adults of junior and senior high school age, young adults' reading interests, and current trends and issues in young adults literature. Pre-requisite: LIS 501
LIS 517--Government Publications
The control and dissemination of government publications, using the Canadian system as a model applicable to other political jurisdictions. Pre-requisite: LIS 501, 502, 503
LIS 519--Introduction to Children's Literature
Literature for children from infancy through the elementary school years, principles of evaluation and selection, and current issues and trends. Pre-requisite: LIS 501
LIS 525--Reference Service Theory and Field Experience
A comprehensive examination of the reference interview, measurement and evaluation techniques for reference service, and related administrative concerns. Extensive field experience. Pre-requisite: LIS 501, 502, 503, 504, 505, 506, plus two electives
LIS 531--Collection Development
An analytical approach to collection management including the acquisition, review and evaluation of collections. Pre-requisite: LIS 501, 502, 503
LIS 532--Cataloguing and Classification
The description and classification of various forms of materials for either manual or computerized situations. Pre-requisite: LIS 501, 502, 506; Pre- or co-requisite: LIS 504
LIS 535--Indexing and Abstracting
The principles and practice of indexing and abstracting in a traditional or computerized centre. Pre-requisite: LIS 501, 502, 503, 505, 506
LIS 536--Electronic Reference and Information Retrieval
Online information storage and retrieval services, including their development, maintenance, and use. This course may require the payment of additional miscellaneous fees. Pre-requisite: LIS 501, 502, 503, 506
LIS 537--Management of Information Technology
The selection, installation, and management of  integrated library systems and local area networks. The principal model is the integrated library system, with considerable emphasis on strategic factors, including negotiations and contracts. Pre-requisite: LIS 501, 502, 503, 506; Pre- or co-requisite: LIS 504
LIS 538--Automation In Libraries and Information Centres
An examination of topics of current interest related to the application of computers and communications technology in libraries and information centres. Pre-requisite: LIS 501, 502, 503, 506, EDIT 535
LIS 540--School Media Centres
The concept and organization of media resource centres in elementary and secondary schools. Pre-requisite: LIS 501,502,503
LIS 545--Management of Resources in Library and Information Services
The field of resource management and its applications in library and information services. Pre-requisite: LIS 501, 502, 503, 504
LIS 546--Marketing Library and Information Services
The principles of marketing and public relations for nonprofit organizations, with an emphasis on library and information services. Pre-requisite: LIS 501, 502, 503, 504
LIS 548--Library Services to Children and Young Adults
The principles and practices of library service to children and young adults. Pre-requisite: LIS 501, One of LIS 510, 515, or 519; Pre- or co-requisite: LIS 504
LIS 582--Contemporary Issues in Library and information Studies
New and continuing topics of concern or debate in the library and information professions, and how they influence information attitudes and programs. Pre-requisite: LIS 501, may vary
LIS 586--History of the Book
The historical, esthetic, and economic bases of the "book" and its role in the recording and preservation of information and ideas. Pre- requisite: LIS 501
LIS 587--Facilities Planning for Libraries and Information Centres
Various types of library building needs, the involvement of librarians and architects in the planning process, and various contemporary building styles. Pre-requisite: LIS 501
LIS 588--Communications
The principles and practices of professional communication in library and information service organizations. Pre-requisite: LIS 501, 504
LIS 589--Feminism and Library and Information Studies
Examines the nature of librarianship as a profession, issues related to information, and practices of information management from gendered perspectives using applicable feminist theoretical interpretations. Pre-requisite: LIS 501
LIS 590--Practicum
The application of course work learning through experiential learning in a library and information centre setting. Pre-requisite: LIS 501, 502, 503, 504, 505, 506, plus two electives
LIS 591--Publishing
The organized business of writing, manufacturing and marketing of books and other media. Pre-requisite: LIS 501
LIS 593--History of the Record
The development of archives and records management practice since ancient times, with emphasis on contemporary professional standards and methods. Pre-requisite: LIS 501
LIS 594--Records Management
The theory and techniques of records management. Pre-requisite: LIS 501
LIS 595--Special Media Archives
Management of non-textual archival records and examination of special issues facing contemporary archivists such as freedom of information and copyright. Prerequisite: LIS 593.
LIS 597--Seminar in Advanced Research Methods for Library and Information           Studies
In-depth examination of research methodologies relevant to the field of library and information studies, and to the research interests of students pursuing doctoral programs, thesis-route master's programs, and other advanced projects. Pre-requisite: LIS 501, 502, 503, 504, 505, 506
LIS 598--Special Topics
A current topic of significance to, or a special aspect of, library and information studies may be examined as demand and resources permit. Pre-requisite: Depends on topic
LIS 599--Directed Study
Further study of special topics and issues, based on knowledge acquired in previous courses or on significant prior experience. Topic to be approved by the School. Pre-requisite: LIS 501, 502, 503, 504, 505, 506, plus two electives
LIS 600--Capping Exercise
The capping exercise will be an HTML version of the student's best work in the MLIS program, and a reflective paper on the significance of work. The capping exercise paper is to be submitted during the final term of course work. Required Course

 

 
 
 
 
 


Undergraduate Courses

LIS 401--Survey of Children's Literature
Literature for children from infancy through the elementary school years. The emphasis is on books currently read by children. Principles of evaluation, children's reading needs and interests, and current issues and trends will be examined. This course is not open to MLlS students.

 
LIS 402--Storytelling
The past and present forms of storytelling, including the oral tradition, the function of the storyteller, the selection of material and the techniques of telling stories and listening to stories. This course is not open to MLlS students.
LIS 403--Survey of Young Adult Materials
A survey of fiction in all media forms for upper elementary and secondary school-ages readers. Adolescents' reading and media needs and interests, and current issues and trends will be examined. This course is not open to MLIS students.
