I am an Associate Professor of Sport Management at the University of Alberta.  He has a joint position with the Faculty’s of Physical Education & Recreation and Strategic Management & Organizations.  I have taught sport management, organizational behavior, principles of management, strategic management, organizational change and organizational theory to undergraduates, masters and doctoral level students.  Prior to joining the faculty at the University of AlbertaI,  was an assistant professor of management at Texas Tech University.  In 2004, he was awarded the Texas Tech University President’s Excellence in Teaching Award. My academic research is in the areas of institutional and organizational change and leadership and performance. My work has been published in the top academic journals, and I  have presented my research at more than 25 conferences during the past 10 years in locations ranging from Copenhagen, Oslo, Vienna, Mexico City, Chicago, Washington, D.C. and Boston. Since 1996, I have been involved with the Performance Center (having been on the board of directors since 2002 and President  2006-2007).  During my time with the Performance Center, I have consulted with a variety of organizations ranging from the United States Postal Service to the Government of Botswana on the subject of leadership and change.  I also have a long-standing engagement with the Maynard Institute; the mission of which is to help print media employees move from positions of writer and reporter to senior leadership positions in newspapers and magazines.  From these engagements I have published and presented many articles on organizational change.  For more information on the kinds of consulting I do, click on my short courses description.

 

I received his PhD from Northwestern University / Kellogg Graduate School of Management in Organizational Behavior and Sociology in 1999.  Before that I was a manufacturing manager for 5 years with Proctor and Gamble, with primary responsibilities involving the manufacturing, and shipping of Zest bar soap world wide and the successful development of the Oil of Olay bar soap.  I received his Undergraduate degree in Industrial Engineering and Management Sciences.

 

Outside of work, I host a small business column on the CBC (740am in Edmonton) radio program Radio Active (with Peter Brown).  I am on every other Monday at 4:40pm and I talk mostly about small business issues, but sometimes about the business of sport. I am the president of both Edmonton Youth Basketball Association and the Southeast Youth Basketball Association.  In addition to working with the board, I coach boys basketball and have been coaching since 1995.
