This seminar will take up contemporary debates around nationalism, cosmopolitanism, and global justice, especially as these cast light on what might motivate people to act justly toward proximate and distant others. Readings will include work by the likes of Seyla Benhabib, Norman Geras, Jurgen Habermas, David Miller, Martha Nussbaum, Thomas Pogge, Richard Rorty, Peter Singer, Elizabeth Spelman, and Joan Tronto.
