PHILOSOPHY 550: MORAL PHILOSOPHY [taught with PHIL 450, A1]

A1 First Term M 14:00-16:50 J. Welchman
Although Aristotle's ethics remains the predominant historical source upon which contemporary character-based ethics draws, Hume's ethics are increasingly being seen as providing an important alternative. We will examine Hume's ethical theory, in particular his account of virtue, and the roles sympathy, self-interest, and convention play in his account of moral character.
Texts: David Hume, A Treatise of Human Nature (Oxford); David Hume, An Enquiry Concerning the Principles of Morals (Hackett)
