Von Stephanitz 1927. German Shepherd in Word and Picture. The "original" book on the breed. The GSD was created in 1899 as a working dog. It's "looks" were immaterial to von Stephanitz, but it's "function" was critical. Therefore the versatile training of the GSD was part of its original heritage. In North America, the breeding standard focuses upon the "looks" of the dog with training being secondary. In Germany, the ability of the dog to function continues to be primary. Looks remain secondary. |
