Welcome to the Leijun Li group in Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering at the University of Alberta! Our group conducts award-winning research in physical metallurgy, welding metallurgy, and additive manufacturing of alloys.

Latest Award: We received the 2025 Warren F. Savage Memorial Award from the American Welding Society! This award recognizes "the greatest contribution to the understanding of welding metallurgy". On the right is a page of the Welding Journal paper that shows the 3-D structure of an inclusion cluster and a model for the inclusion-interface migration and separation during the thermal cycles.

New Publication: Our new paper co-authored and guided by Dr. Tom Lienert on laser-DED of Grade 91 was recently published. Congratulations to Zhe Lyu and co-authors for applying welding metallurgy to the kinetics of phase transformations (both solidification segregation and delta ferrite to austenite) during rapid cooling. Please pay attention to the "extended CCT diagram" concept the paper proposed for rapid cooling rates. For open access: doi:/10.1016/j.jmrt.2025.04.173.

New Publication: Our new paper co-authored and guided by Dr. Xiaoying Fang on LPBF of NiTiCu shape memory alloy was recently published in Alloys and Compounds. Here is the link for share.
