Welcome to the Leijun Li group in Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering at the University of Alberta! Our group conducts award-winning research in physical metallurgy, welding metallurgy, and additive manufacturing of alloys.

Latest Award: We received the 2025 Warren F. Savage Memorial Award from the American Welding Society! This award recognizes "the greatest contribution to the understanding of welding metallurgy". The award has a special meaning for our group, because Prof. Li did his doctoral study under Prof. Messler in the Savage Lab in MRC 137 at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where Doc Savage was the founding grandpa teacher. On the right is a page of the Welding Journal paper that shows the 3-D structure of an inclusion cluster and a model for the inclusion-interface migration and separation during the thermal cycles.

Latest News: We celebrate three recent PhD defenses - Zhe Lyu, Tailin Ren, and Ravi Kopparthi successfully defended their PhD theses. Congratulations to the newly minted Dr. Lyu, Dr. Ren, and Dr. Ravi!
