Journal of the History of Philosophy

Founded in response to a motion passed by the Eastern Division of the American Philosophical Association in December 1957 approving "the establishment of a journal devoted to the history of philosophy," the Journal of the History of Philosophy is an internationally recognized quarterly that publishes peer-reviewed articles, notes, discussions, and book reviews devoted to the history of Western philosophy, broadly conceived.

Now in its fifty-fourth year, the Journal is published by The Johns Hopkins University Press and is available online at Project Muse.

"The Journal of the History of Philosophy is the oldest journal devoted to scholarship in English on all periods of the history of philosophy. It has been the venue for many seminal articles over the years, and its articles and extensive reviews remain indispensible reading for every student of the history of philosophy."
Paul Guyer, University of Pennsylvania

"The Journal of the History of Philosophy has established itself as the leading American journal in the field; it is essential reading for anyone with a serious interest in the history of philosophy."
Nicholas Jolley, University of California, Irvine

The Editor is pleased to announce the appointment of Jean-Luc Solère (Boston College) as Book Review Editor of the Journal of the History of Philosophy, effective July 1, 2018. Professor Solère is a member of the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (France), and taught at the Universities of Lille, Brussels and Louvain (Belgium) before joining the Philosophy Department at Boston College in 2005.

The Editor and JHP Board of Directors also thank Debra Nails, Professor Emerita of Philosophy at Michigan State University, for her excellent work as JHP Book Review Editor over the past five years. Professor Nails did much to streamline the operations of the Book Review Office in view of new realities in the book publishing world, ensuring that each JHP issue features a full complement of reviews of books our readers need to know about.

The JHP congratulates Robert Clewis, Professor of Philosophy at Gwynedd Mercy University, whose recent JHP article, "Beauty and Utility in Kant's Aesthetics: The Origins of Adherent Beauty" (vol. 56.2, April 2018: 305-35), has won the Wilfrid Sellars Prize of the North American Kant Society.

March 1, 2018

Effective immediately, the JHP is lifting the suspension, instituted on December 1, of consideration of new submissions in early modern philosophy, as well as of new *revise and resubmits*. Our publication queue is back within acceptable range in all historical periods.

January 29, 2018

The JHP Board of Directors awards an annual prize of $1,500 for the best contribution to the Articles selection in the Journal. On the Board’s behalf, we are pleased to announce that the winner of the twelfth-annual prize is
Clare Carlisle for "Spinoza's Acquiescentia" JHP 55.2 (April 2017): 209-36.

January 8, 2018

The JHP Board of Directors awards an annual prize of $5,000 for the best book published in the history of philosophy the previous year. On the Board’s behalf, we are pleased to announce that the winner of the prize for 2017 is Shelley Weinberg
's Consciousness in Locke
(Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2016).

Effective December 1, 2017, the JHP is temporarily suspending consideration of all new submissions in early modern philosophy up to but not including Kant. We are also temporarily suspending all new *revise and resubmits*, meaning that papers receiving R&Rs from our referees will be simply rejected.

We have enjoyed a healthy increase in submissions to the JHP this year, but along with this our publication queue has grown. This is affecting our ability to ensure all JHP articles appear within a year of their date of final acceptance.

May 25, 2016

The JHP is pleased to announce that Al McLuckie (PhD, Stanford) will take over as Managing Editor of the JHP on July 1, 2016.
