Welcome to "The British Empire" Gateway, and to the history of British exploration and empire. I teach courses on these topics at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada.
At the Poisoned Arrows site, I present my recent research on missionary collections from the South Pacific and the persistence of stories about "poisoned arrows" among naval explorers and in popular culture.
Through the British Empire Gateway, you will find links to all aspects of British imperial history.
The 18th C. Maritime World presents one of my world history lectures, discussing how and why Britain became a global maritime power.
Have fun! And if you know about links that you'd like to see included here, please let me know. I want this gateway to be as extensive and multidisciplinary as possible. I'd also like to thank the many people who have linked this site to their own educational or personal pages; your support helps make these pages more comprehensive and accessible.
In the meantime, if you're wondering about my academic background, or looking for my address at U of A, go to my CV .
You're welcome to send questions or comments to me at jane.samson@ualberta.ca
