Craig A. Emmerton, Ph.D.
Aquatic Scientist

Freshwater science, biogeochemistry, and environmental monitoring.

I am currently an Aquatic Scientist with the Government of Alberta and an Adjunct Faculty member in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Alberta.

My research integrates hydrology, biogeochemistry, terrestrial ecology, and landscape-scale analysis to better understand how water, carbon, nutrients, and contaminants move through freshwater catchments and how those systems respond to human stressors and climate change.

Research focus

Freshwater catchments

Assessing how watershed processes regulate water quality, nutrients, and carbon cycling.

Climate stressors

Understanding ecosystem responses to wildfire, drought, warming, land use, and changing hydrology.

Contaminants

Investigating mercury, nutrients, and organic pollutants in lakes, rivers, and downstream systems.

Remote sensing & geospatial analysis

Using spatial tools and field data to scale findings from local systems to regional environmental patterns.
