IGEL Summer Institute

General Background Readings

Background Readings for Both the Summer Institute and the IGEL Conference:
The following are two articles that we encourage you to read
in preparation for the Summer Institute and the IGEL Conference. They concern the history of interdisciplinary efforts among IGEL members (Steen) and the cognitivist tradition of interdisciplinary studies of narrative (Sternberg). Both are pertinent to our discussions of interdisciplinary studies of literature and to IGEL conference sessions (see the IGEL Conference program).

A Background Reading for the Summer Institute:
The following article is a useful discussion of interdisciplinarity in general. It is a recommended supplement to our discussions of interdisciplinary studies of literature.

A Background Reading Regarding Approaches to Empirical Cross-Cultural Research:
There are similarities between the challenges faced by investigators who cross disciplinary boundaries and those who cross cultural boundaries. Perhaps the greatest challenge in interdisciplinary endeavours is to attain a rich characterization of the perspectives and methods guiding inquiry in a neighbouring discipline. Similarly, a fundamental challenge in research that crosses cultural boundaries is to bridge gaps that are often deeply embedded in history, ethnicity, and language. Participants in the Summer Institute not only represent diverse cultures, but a number have also indicated their interest in the conduct of empirical cross-cultural research. To further discussion of such cross-cultural possibilities--and to complement other presentations--the reading below addresses selected design issues in cross-cultural studies.
