Findings:
- 1 challenge per day somewhere in Canada.
- 700 challenges over 3 years 1985-1987 by 600 people to remove
or restrict more than 500 titles for 900 reasons, most of which
concerned sex, nudity, violence, cruelty, and age appropriateness.
- 86% of all challenges resulted in discussion or written communication
with complainants but no change in the access status of targeted
materials.
- 60% placed no restrictions on access to materials by children
and young adults.
- 65% experienced no challenges to collection holdings over the
3-year period 1985-1987.
- 1/2 of all respondent public libraries publicly and officially
opposed Bill C-54, the 1987 Tory proposal to replace the obscenity
provisions in the Criminal Code with new censorship legislation.
