Sandin Honoured

Dr. Reuben B. Sandin, Professor of Chemistry and a legend on the campus, has been chosen as the first Canadian to receive the Outstanding College Chemistry Teacher Award sponsored by the Manufacturing Chemists' Association, Washington, D.C.

Professor Sandin's distinguished career in teaching and research at the University of Alberta stretches over forty years. During that time some 200 of his students have taken the Ph.D. degree in chemistry, and many of these students are now recognized leaders in the chemical profession.

After receiving his early education near Wetaskiwin, Alberta, he studied at the University of Alberta, receiving the B.A. in chemistry with high distinction at the age of nineteen. In 1924 he received his Ph.D. degree from the University of Chicago and was appointed to the staff at the University of Alberta.

Widely recognized as an outstanding teacher and research worker, Professor Sandin was awarded a Rockefeller Foundation Fellowship at Harvard University in 1939; in 1958, he was elected a Fellow of the Chemical Institute of Canada. That organization also honored him with a special citation in organic chemistry in 1960, and by choosing him for its Chemical Education Award in 1962.

Professor Sandin and his students have published over sixty research papers in organic chemistry. He is especially well-known for his contributions to the synthesis of chemical agents for the treatment of cancer.

Published Spring/Summer 1962.
