CMSC2008 Post-Conference Trip to Jasper, Friday June 20 to June 22, 2008

Following the conference, come and experience the awe-inspiring natural beauty and history of Jasper National Park!  The planned tour will involve sight-seeing at the major attractions in Jasper and along the world famous Icefields Parkway to Lake Louise. 

 

Day 1 - Edmonton to Jasper

Tour Director will pick the group up from the U of A campus in the morning and travel to Jasper.

Upon arrival in Jasper, sightseeing tours will include Pyramid Lake, Jasper Park Lodge, Maligne Canyon and Maligne Lake.  Pyramid Lake is situated at the foot of Pyramid Mountain, overlooking the town of Jasper.  Picturesque Maligne canyon is a limestone formation that features a waterfall plunging 165 ft.  Maligne Lake is the second largest glacier-fed lake in the world, and home to famous Spirit Island pictured above.   Accommodation in Jasper will be at Marmot Lodge (or similar, depending on availability).

 

Day 2 - Jasper to Lake Louise Tour

A full day of sightseeing along the Ice fields Parkway is planned, including stops at Athabasca Falls, Sunwapta Falls, Peyto Lake and Lake Louise.  One of the most powerful falls in the mountain national parks, the Athabasca Falls shown above pour over a layer of quartzite causing the water to cut into the softer limestone beneath, creating intricate patterns and potholes.  Marvel at the bright and unique turquoise color of Peyto Lake, resulting form the glacial ‘rock flour’ flowing into it which contains suspended rock particles.  Finally, take in the splendor of Chateau Lake Louise and the surrounding scenery before returning to Jasper.

 

Day 3 - Jasper to Edmonton

Return to University of Alberta campus for drop-offs, and continue to Edmonton International Airport (approximately 2pm)
