Double Bloodstream
Individual exhibition (video installation) Student Cultural Center V.I.P. Gallery, Belgrade, June 2005.
The
connection of Serbs with the body of their maternal soil and the mutual
link of Serbian generations, what is usually called, Serbdom', endures thanks
to the preservation of the same connective substance – Serbian blood. It
flows in a double bloodstream. Through one it is transferred from generation
to generation, through the other, with the sacrificial blood of fallen heroes,
it nourishes the body of Serbia, the native soil (…) The mythic renewal
of the ethnos is created through the fertilization of the native soil with
native blood. This is a magic force, or rather a sacrificial fertilization
by means of blood spilt in a war for existential space, that is, for the
state territory understood ethnically. The soil which is made fruitful by
the blood of those who fell for their fatherland has the role of an ethnic
womb, while the wombs of individual biological mothers are reduced to transmitting
and disseminating the fruits which come ex terra.
Ivan Colovic Politics of Identity in Serbia
Between
a woman and a man, as if by a modern Jefimija's hand, Serbian male names
are written out: Avakum, Avram, Adam, Aksentije … Who are we? Who are women
and who are men if from the very conception we belong not to ourselves but
to nation and state?
Serbian mothers are condemned for not bearing enough Serbian children –
particularly boys – the Serbian warriors who will spill blood for Serbian
territory. They weep bitterly and curse God when their only sons die in
wars, says the Church, but why don't they curse themselves for not bearing
more children – to be their consolation. Dire warnings are sounded that
child-killers " killed at least two Serbias with their abortions in
the last 50 years. "
The video installation part of the project was exibited in Student Kultral
Center - SKC, V.I.P. Gallery ( Doubble bloodstream), Belgrade , in June
2005.
