Cinecittà
Paintings
In Cinecittà I transpose the magic of cinema into the
magic of painting by following the resonances with art history found in
films, and by making paintings more cinematic by formal and thematic means.
Formally, I push the paintings closer to the cinematic experience by creating
movement both within single frames and between frames in a series, and
by modifying the viewer’s temporal engagement with the painting by slowing
down the perception and moving it closer to that experienced in a movie
theater. Each canvas is a complex montage of film and art fragments connected
through idiosyncratic associations that come from my life experience,
and from intertextual links embedded within films themselves, as directors
quote other films or classical art sometimes in long chains of homage.
The whole series could be read as an art historical-cinematic dream sequence
of my life.
