Dr. Li is Professor in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, at the University of Alberta, Canada. She is the Past-Chair for Environmental Chemistry Division of Canadian Society for Chemistry. She has led three international collaborative projects, supported by the Canadian Water Network NCE and the Water Research Foundation (USA), on the development of highly sensitive analytical and toxicological technologies for water research. Her diverse research, including analytical technology development and detection of microbial pathogens, proteins, chemotherapeutics, and water contaminants, has been published in Analytical Chemistry, Angewandte Chemie, Chemical Research in Toxicology, Environmental Science and Technology, Journal of the American Chemical Society, and Nature Communications.
Dr. Li is an elected Fellow of the Chemical Institute of Canada (FCIC). She is the recipient of the 2010 W.A.E. McBryde Medal and the 2017 Environment Division Research & Development Dima Award. The McBryde Medal from the Canadian Society for Chemistry recognizes her "significant achievement in pure or applied analytical chemistry". The Chemical Institute of Canada Environment Division Research & Development Award is presented for "distinguished contributions to research and/or development in the fields of environmental chemistry or environmental chemical engineering”. Dr. Li has also received Excellence in Mentoring Award (2014) and Annual Killam Professorship (2013) from the University of Alberta, an NSERC University Faculty Award (2002-2007), and an NSERC Industrial Research Fellowship (1995/96 and 1996/97). Dr. Li is guest professor at Wuhan University, Zhejiang University, Southwest University, Jianghan University, Nanjing Medical University, and Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing.
Dr. Li obtained undergraduate training at Hangzhou University (1979-1983) (now Zhejiang University). She obtained her M.Sc. in Environmental Chemistry from the Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences (1983-1986). After coming to Canada, Dr. Li obtained another M.Sc. degree. The second M.Sc. was in Analytical Chemistry from Brock University (1988-1989). Dr. Li received her Ph.D. in Environmental/Analytical Chemistry from the University of British Columbia (1990-1994). She did her NSERC Industrial postdoctoral research in bioanalytical chemistry under the supervision of Professor Norm Dovichi at the University of Alberta (1995-1999) with the support of MDS Sciex.
In the past, Dr. Li has worked as a scientist with PE Sciex and as Director of Analytical Department with Kinetana Group Inc. She was recruited as a faculty member to the Department of Public Health Sciences (July 2001) and Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology (2005), University of Alberta. She was promoted to Associate Professor with Tenure in December 2005 and to Full Professor in December 2010.
