Baku
is largest city of Azerbaijan, as well as the largest city on the Caspian Sea, and of the Caucasus region. It is located on the southern shore of the Absheron Peninsula, which projects into the Caspian Sea.

The city consists of two principal parts: the downtown and the old Inner City (21.5 ha). Baku's urban population at the beginning of 2009 was estimated at just over two million people. Baku is divided into eleven administrative districts and 48 townships. Among these are the townships on islands in the Baku Bay and the town of Oil Rocks built on stilts in the Caspian Sea, 60 km away from Baku. The Inner City of Baku along with the Shirvanshah's Palace and Maiden Tower were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000.


According to the Lonely Planet's ranking Baku is also among the world's top ten destinations for urban nightlife. The city is the scientific, cultural and industrial center of Azerbaijan. Many sizeable Azerbaijani institutions have their headquarters there. Baku is notable for its history of liberalism, and social activism. It is famous around the globe as a center for academic achievement, scientific exploration, free speech, and the arts. It has a refreshingly open-minded approach to life and the world in general.

One of the leading universities in the field of technical education of Azerbaijan Republic, Azerbaijan Technical University (AzTU) was founded in 1950 under the name of Azerbaijan Polytechnic Institute.

At present the University trains highly qualified specialists and academic personnel in 28 different areas and almost 70 programs in machine-building, metallurgy, information and computer technologies, electrical engineering, telecommunication, transport, engineering business and other fields.
More than 600 teaching staff including 68 professors, doctors of sciences, 332 associated professors, and candidate of sciences (PhD) work in 46 departments. Local and foreign specialists carry out scientific research works towards their academic degrees.
The results of scientific achievements of the University are published in the scientific-technical journal “Research Works “.

The University library with more than 700 thousand books contains multiple reading halls, as well as, about 20 multimedia halls with more than 400 personal computers, specialized laboratories are at the services of the students and researchers.
