Course policies

Late work

Students have five late days shared across the three programming labs. An assignment specification will explain how late days are counted for that assignment. Final projects cannot be submitted late without prior approval.

Collaboration and AI-assisted tools

Programming labs are individual assignments unless otherwise stated. Discussion of high-level ideas is encouraged, but submitted work must be the student’s own.

AI-assisted programming tools, including ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and GitHub Copilot, are permitted. Students remain responsible for understanding every aspect of their submissions. During a presentation or instructor meeting, a student may be asked to explain, modify, or extend submitted work. Inability to demonstrate sufficient understanding may reduce the grade.

Academic integrity

The University of Alberta expects all students to uphold its standards of academic integrity and student conduct. Students should familiarize themselves with the Student Academic Integrity Policy, the definitions of academic misconduct, and the Student Conduct Policy information.

Academic misconduct includes, among other things, cheating, plagiarism, contract cheating, unauthorized collaboration, misrepresentation, and helping another person commit an offence. The permission to use AI-assisted tools in this course applies only within the boundaries stated above and in each assignment specification. It does not authorize students to misrepresent work they do not understand or to violate an assignment’s collaboration rules.

All forms of academic dishonesty are unacceptable. Unfamiliarity with the rules, procrastination, or personal pressure does not excuse an offence. Ask the instructor before submitting work if you are uncertain whether a form of help, collaboration, reuse, or attribution is permitted.

Academic integrity concerns in this course will be reported through the College of Natural and Applied Sciences and handled using the university’s established process. Possible outcomes include grade penalties, failure in a course, and, for serious cases, suspension or expulsion. The applicable university process provides students with due process and avenues of appeal. Suspected non-academic misconduct will be reported to the appropriate university office.

Accommodations

Students requiring academic accommodations should register with the University of Alberta Academic Success Centre as early as possible and observe its stated deadlines. Please communicate approved course accommodations to the instructor through the university process.

Course materials and recording

Audio or video recording of lectures or other course activities requires prior written consent from the instructor unless it is part of an approved accommodation. Course materials are provided for personal study and may not be redistributed without permission from the content author.
