Project Overview
The Active Kids Project: The Emiyuu Ayayaachilit Awaash Project (EAAP) is being conducted in order to understand the risk factors for obesity in elementary school children in 2 Cree communities in Quebec. This study investigates diet, body image and self-concept, anthropometrics, and physical activity and fitness.

Preliminary unpublished results indicate that foods of little nutritional value are the major contributors of calories and fat in children’s diets. Approximately two-thirds of children are overweight or obese. Of particular concern is the level of central adiposity in the participants that is associated with the development of metabolic and cardiovascular diseases. This risk profile is intensified by the accompanying low physical fitness and inadequate activity levels of children.
