PHILOSOPHY 594: SELECTED PROBLEMS IN PHILOSOPHY (PHILOSOPHY, POLITICS, AND PSYCHOPATHOLOGY)

B1 Second Term T 14:00-16:50 C. Heyes
This graduate seminar will examine philosophical issues surrounding the definition, diagnosis, treatment, and experience of mental illness. The primary, but not exclusive, focus will be on historical, cultural, and phenomenological (rather than on psychological or cognitive scientific) approaches to psychopathology. Among the examples of "mental disorders" we will consider are: depression, anorexia nervosa, multiple personality disorder, and gender identity disorder. If it remains graduate-only, the seminar will also be oriented around developing some skills for survival and success in graduate school and academic world, including revising writing, reviewing and responding constructively to reviewers, and publishing.
