Developing Routines in the SL/FL Classroom

As Jin observes the reaction of the class to his mentor teacher he begins to feel overwhelmed; Jin realizes that there is so much going on at once, and he worries he won’t be able to manage the class as well as his MT. Jin is facing a problem that many student teachers face, and he has yet to learn how to deal with it. He is aware that there are routines in his mentor teacher's class and that the transitions function smoothly, but he does not realize how they occur. Although Jin may not realize it, this opportunity to observe is important, and the more detailed his observations are, the more they will guide him in his future teaching.

Why establish classroom routine? How do routines help?

Establishing classroom routines is beneficial for both the students and the teacher. These routines make the expectations of the class clear, so the students know what is expected of them and the teacher is not forced to remind the students repeatedly of those expectations. Clear expectations result in better classroom management smoother, transitions between activities and a more positive classroom environment. In a second language classroom, it also helps to reinforce some very basic and useful phrases in the target language.

How can I establish routines in my classroom?

When setting the expectations and guidelines, the most important thing is to be consistent. These rules are to be applied equally to everyone, lest students feel that there is favoritism. Students can also be included in setting these guidelines, so they can feel that their input in the classroom is valued.

Where can routines be established?

What types of routines have you seen used in the classroom in your experience?

Routines can be established for many different parts of the class that happen every day, or even for occasional occurrences. Each teacher needs to decide what is important for them, and what routines each class needs to function smoothly. The following are some examples of some routines that can be established:

welcome routine
entering the classroom
announcements
late arrival
missed work
teacher’s attention signal
supplies needed for class
assignments
getting into groups
food/drinks in the classroom
housekeeping

interactions between students and teacher
student talk
asking questions
getting help finishing work early responding to fire drills"codes", or other alerts   rules/punishments   assignments (late hand in, headings, typed/handwritten) dismissal
