Professional Development in the 21st Century
With education and learning being in a state of constant flux it is important that those in the teaching profession strive constantly to produce the ideal. In creating this web site, we used the ideals of 21st century learning as guidelines to promote the best teaching and learning:
- 21st century learning should try to reflect the most honest viewpoint of the world as possible; human interactions and relationships are complicated and diverse, and as these relationships change and evolve, so must the teaching structure. Positive human relationships must be promoted, as well as the ability to adapt to the changing skill sets acquired in today’s world.
- Technology has become a daily factor for most people in our society, and this cannot be ignored in the classroom setting; the ideal situation for teachers is to incorporate technology every day in a way that promotes positive learning and supports the curriculum.
- The use of technology can also help the teacher connect the classroom to the outside world, which contributes to the students’ learning on an ongoing basis. Students learn not only from teachers, but also from the people, institutions and community around them.
- Students must not only learn content, but critical thinking skills so as to approach the world around them with open eyes and an open heart as promoted by Unesco’s Four Pillars of Education:
