The Learning Context

Daniel is trying to figure out how he can help his new student. He knows that there is something different he should be doing in his instruction but he has not yet considered other factors; such as, the student's background. We often take for granted the systems which are in place in Canada and we might not always think about how things differ from country to country. Of course we know that in different countries people speak other languages, eat different food and celebrate different holidays but we are not always as aware of the 'deep culture ' of a specific country. Information such as how schools are structured, the role of students and teachers or the value of education can differ from society to society. These are some very important factors to consider when working with students from other cultures. In this section we will take a closer look at this information and hear from teachers who have immigrated from abroad in order to better understand what life was like before coming to Canada.
