Assignment: Science Vignette

Sample Vignettes
Resources :
The Nature of Science and History of Science sections of the 'Background for Science Teaching' unit have several useful resources.

Instructions

The purpose of a science vignette is to help your students understand the complexity of the nature of science and to explore the pathways that led to scientific understanding. The story you write is based on your research of a scientist(s) or scientific event. It should reveal the "how part of science" and draw attention to the "subtle forces affecting research". That is, it draws attention to the complexities of the nature of science. The story should involve a
person that is fairly interesting and he/she must have done something that people think is important.

Following your story, include some questions you would ask students. The questions should help students consider the nature of science. It should be written at a level appropriate for the intended target audience. Include a reference list so that other teachers or students could pursue your sources.

Evaluation

Evaluation will be based on the following:

  • curriculum fit.
  • how well your story focuses on some aspect of scientific research and the nature of science.
  • how well your questions encourage students to consider the nature of science.
  • interest/motivation generated by the story.
  • communication (well written for the target audience).
  • references (that is an indication of the amount of research you conducted for this assignment).
