Evaluation of Online Discussion Participation

Back to Technology Issue Assignment
Back to Assignments

It is difficult to evaluate an online discussion. I'll be looking at quality rather than quantity. To help me evaluate the online participation I will look at your entries and categorize the comments according to the following:

  • acknowledgement of opinion question (thoughtful query)
  • compare (similarity, analogy)
  • contrast (distinction, discriminate)
  • evaluation (substantiated judgment, value)
  • idea to example (deduction, analogy)
  • example to idea (induction, conclusion)
  • clarification (reiterating a point)
  • elaboration (building on a point)
  • cause and effect (inference, consequence)
  • off-topic/faulty reasoning (entry inappropriate)

In addition I will look for the following:

  1. The participant posted messages that:
    • furthered the discussion (volunteers observations or ideas),
    • related to earlier messages and developed that conversation further,
    • demonstrated an understanding of the issues,
    • demonstrated an understanding of the issues and related this to personal experiences,
    • expressed/articulated his/her thoughts in a concise, clear manner.

  2. The participant managed to properly post items.

This assignment will be marked on a scale of 1-5.

Things for you to think about:

Self-Assessment (the scale might go from always to never)

  • I read the postings and mindfully considered the information presented.
  • I thoughtfully reflected on the posting(s) before composing a response.

Reflection

  • Did the online discussion enhance and/or limit you in this course? Please explain.
