Module Two: Electronic Mail

Objectives of Module Two
Set up and use my Eudora Light email program
Be able to send, receive and read email messages
Be able to successfully send email attachments
Assignments
- Write a short critique of Eudora and send it as an attachment to the course instructor
- Determine my level of Internet connectivity
Using Eudora Light
The e-mail program I use is Eudora Light. It came with the Netsurf package I bought from the university in order to get connected to GPU. I realize that Eudora Light does not have as much to offer as Eudora Pro, but I have never had a problem with it, and it does everything I need it to do. I like it much better than pine or Pegasus Mail, which we use on our LAN at the School of Library and Information Studies. The main difference is that Eudora Light uses a graphical user interface rather than just characters. I can simply click with the mouse on one of many icons at the top of the screen in order to reply to mail, trash old messages, print a message, forward messages, send, etc. Sending and receiving attachments with Eudora Light is incredibly straightforward. There is an icon for that as well. Eudora Light also has a help function for new users, though I have rarely used it. The program is extremely user-friendly and easy to figure out by simply pointing and clicking. I used this method to figure out how to use the address book. This feature is very handy, because it means you do not have to memorize all of your friends' e-mail addresses, and you only have to type the whole address out once, when you enter it into the address book. This option is very helpful for people, like myself, who are prone to make typos.

Levels of Connectivity
My Internet connection uses level 3 connectivity because:
- I connect to the Internet from my University of Alberta GPU account
- The University is on-line 24 hours a day, so I have constant access
- The University is directly connected to the Internet
- The University has a mainframe
- The software I use is on a mainframe
