Watch a close-up view ofthe vapor products evolve from cracking of Athabasca Bitumen

Rapid heating of Athabasca Vacuum Residue to 530 oC

50 mm thick layer of bitumen on Curie point alloy, heating at ca. 1000 K/s using an induction field. The coil for the induction field is visible around the outside of the tube. The sample is held in a nitrogen atmosphere to prevent combustion. The "smoke" that evolves is tiny droplets of liquid product from the bitumen.
