For more than two years, I have been developing particle shadow velocimetry (PSV) measurement techniques to study multiphase flows in creeping flow regime. The main idea of optical measurement techniques, such as particle image velocimetry (PIV) and PSV, is to take sequential images from a fluid flow, in which tracer particles are mixed. Based on the displacement of particles in between images, the velocity vector field could be determined.
My M.Sc. project is about developing quantitative information of single air bubbles and oil droplets rising in a net co-flow passing through a mini-slot. I have used commercial image processing softwares (Davis 8.3.0, LaVision GmbH), or developed in-hous image acquisition codes.In the rising bubble experiment, we derived air bubble rising velocity and diameter, and flow around the bubbles .
The second part of my experimental study is matching refractive index for heavy oil droplets rising in a co-current flow passing through a mini-slot. I have investigated the internal counter rotating vortices inside the single oil droplets for diffrent droplet sizes and different bulk flow rates. Different processing approaches were used for this experiment, and results were compared together.
