The use of the SOLIDWORKS modeling software in order to design solid models and make drawings is an essential aspect of the work many mechanical engineers perform. Here at the University of Alberta, engineering students are first exposed to and learn to use SOLIDWORKS in the MecE 265 course. It is at this initial learning stage that it is imperative that students experience and learn SOLIDWORKS in as clear and educational a way as possible.
As part of the Curriculum Development Team, I’ve worked in depth with SOLIDWORKS and have revised and improved the tutorials used by the students to improve their experience and understanding of SOLIDWORKS as they go through the tutorials. We’ve also worked on and built various learning aids, via 3D Printing, to enrich the student’s experience and understanding of concepts demonstrated in the tutorials, such as a Splitting LEGO block to demonstrate section views and a functional Air Engine.
