An economic performance assessment tool using linear matrix inequality performance assessment (LMIPA) was developed in MATLAB® to allow easy performance assessment of control loops using advanced process control techniques, such as model predictive control (MPC) and to incorporate the assessment of economic constraints on the system. programme was developed by the Computer Process Control Group at the University of Alberta.

In economic performance assessment, not only is the performance of the controller analysed, but also the appropriateness of the constraints placed on the system. The assessment is performed using an optimisation algorithm that determines the potential benefit if the constraint bounds are changed by a predetermined value. The potential benefit is compared with the current value of the benefit.
