According to the definitions used in this article, this dance is clearly a “folk dance,” being performed by peasants. The people of the village of Molodiatyne, near Kolomyia in western Ukraine, are family-based agriculturalists using relatively low technology. The dance in its context is not an “ethnic dance,” according to the article’s definition, since all the participants are members of the same culture, and cross-cultural boundaries are not significantly engaged.
Hutsulka is a very common participatory dance in villages in western Ukraine, from at least the 19th century and continuing today. Hutsulky (plural) are related to kolomyika-type dances. There are many different variants of hutsulka in many different villages. Like this example, hutsulky are typically danced in circles which break down into smaller circles and couples, circling to fast-paced music.
