Process Improvement + Standardization + Imporvement + ...

Mike Stoecklein has a great graphic illustration how standard work
instructions should co-exist with continuous process improvement. Unfortunately, the
following original link is now broken: http://gembawalkabout.tumblr.com/post/16525582888/standard-work-and-pdsa
Note, PDSA = PLAN-DO-STUDY-ACT
John Hunter (https://blog.deming.org/2014/01/standard-work-instructions-are-continually-improved-they-are-not-a-barrier-to-improvement/)
adds that standard work should lock in process improvements and avoid
the common practice of performance degrading in organizations without
continuous process improvement cultures. Degrading performance over time is
common when an improvement project is completed, if the improved
process isn’t documented clearly and the new standard process is not
adopted by everyone. But standard work should not prevent the vital continual improvement of processes.
Standards need to be followed until a decision is made to initiate a
new PDCA process to study and improve the existing process. The question is, when such a decision should be made.
