The Limits of Scientific Management

Yonatan Reshef

Scientific Management is highly inflexible:
- Rules/Bureaucracy
- Specialized technology
- Specialized/unskilles workers
- Pepetuates a culture of inflexibility and conflict that is hard to change

Scientific Management is a competitive hindrance where consumers are willing to pay a premium for specialty goods

Scientific Management can be easily imitated

Management must find ways to become more efficient by relying more and more on the ingenuity of its human resources, but

Scientific Management does not emphasize human resources' creativity and commitment; it encourages absenteeism and turnover (resistance to the system)

Nowadays, the workforce expects more than money from work

Scientific Management compromises quality; it is geared toward production numbers, mass production

Scientific Management is not geared toward process improvement
