ONE MORE TIME: HOW DO YOU MOTIVATE EMPLOYEES?

FREDERICK HERZBERG

IT IS ONLY WHEN ONE HAS A GENERATOR OF ONE'S OWN THAT WE CAN TALK ABOUT MOTIVATION -- ONE WANTS TO DO IT

THE FACTORS INVOLVED IN PRODUCING JOB SATISFACTION AND MOTIVATION ARE SEPARATE AND DISTINCT FROM THE FACTORS THAT LEAD TO JOB DISSATISFACTION

THE OPPOSITE OF JOB SATISFACTION IS NOT JOB DISSATISFACTION BUT, RATHER, NO JOB SATISFACTION; AND SIMILARLY, THE OPPOSITE OF JOB DISSATISFACTION IS NOT JOB SATISFACTION, BUT NO JOB DISSATISFACTION

Job Satisfaction----------------No Job Satisfaction

Job Dissatisfaction----------------No Job Dissatisfaction

HYGIENE (ENVIRONMENTAL; EXTRINSIC) FACTORS -- THE BUILT-IN DRIVES TO AVOID PAIN FROM THE ENVIRONMENT.  HYGIENE FACTORS ARE THE PRIMARY CAUSE OF UNHAPPINESS ON THE JOB

MOTIVATORS (INTRINSIC) FACTORS -- THE SET OF NEEDS THAT ARE RELATED TO THAT UNIQUE HUMAN CHARACTERISTIC, THE ABILITY TO ACHIEVE AND, THROUGH ACHIEVEMENT, TO EXPERIENCE PSYCHOLOGICAL GROWTH

THE STIMULI FOR THE GROWTH NEEDS ARE TASKS THAT INDUCE GROWTH; IN AN INDUSTRIAL SETTING, THEY ARE EMBODIED IN THE JOB CONTENT.  CONVERSELY, THE STIMULI INDUCING PAIN-AVOIDANCE BEHAVIOR ARE FOUND IN THE JOB ENVIRONMENT.

MOVEMENT IS A FUNCTION OF FEAR OF PUNISHMENT OR A DESIRE TO GET EXTRINSIC REWARDS

MOTIVATION IS A FUNCTION OF GROWTH FROM GETTING INTRINSIC REWARDS FROM INTERESTING, STIMULATING AND CHALLENGING WORK

LIKELY CONSEQUENCES OF MOVEMENT
WHAT SHOULD WE EXPECT WHEN THE SOURCES OF MOVEMENT ARE REMOVED?

MOVEMENT LIKELY CREATES RESISTANCE AMONG WORKERS - THEY LIKELY USE THEIR CREATIVITY TO FIGHT IT

  MOVEMENT CAN UNDERMINE QUALITY

MOVEMENT CAN BE STRESSFUL TO EVERYONE

MOVEMENT CAN HAVE SERIOUS RESOURCE IMPLICATIONS
