Challah

We place two Challot on the Shabbat table. We call it "Lechem Mishneh" because before Shabbat God brought down a double portion of "Man" for each person.

It is customary to cover the Challot as we are told that the "Man" was delivered as if inside a box - covered above and below with dew from heaven. We are obliged to have these two Challot for each of the three Shabbat meals.

Immediately after Kiddush we wash our hands, remove the covering from the Challot, mark a place on the nearest Challah with a knife where it is to be cut, and recite the blessing "Hamotzi" aloud.

We then dip the slice of bread in salt and eat it before distributing Challah to the rest of the family.
