About Us

On June 30, 2009 a unique partnership was formed with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding to establish a Western Partnership for Wildland Fire Science at the University of Alberta. The partnership between Alberta Agriculture and Forestry, University of Alberta School of Forest Science & Management, and the Canadian Forest Service – Northern Forestry Centre, Natural Resources Canada provides a shared vision to establish a Centre that will be an international leader in wildland fire science, contributing to shape fire management in Canada and around the world. This innovative partnership recognizes the opportunities to address priority research needs by creating a fire science hub linking Alberta Agriculture and Forestry and the Canadian Forest Service with researchers at the University of Alberta and other Canadian and international research institutions..

The essential character of the WPWFS is research and education. That is, the WPWFS will focus on delivering high-quality knowledge and education to enhance wildland fire management, public awareness and safety, and to help promote healthy and productive ecosystems. The WPWFS will also promote the development and implementation of modern and effective business practices by fire management agencies.
