The competition is open to groups and/or individuals in Alberta, Canada and other countries including University of Alberta alumni. Non-alumni of the University of Alberta are also encouraged to apply.
Members of the University academic and support staff are eligible; however, work carried out under the terms of one’s employment will not be considered.
Members of the Board of Governors, the Senate, the Alumni Council and the University administration cannot be nominated for the award until one year after their term expires.
Posthumous nominations may be considered.
The Nominee must,
Through volunteer service that is above and beyond the requirements of one’s employment and which involves an outstanding contribution of personal time and effort for the benefit of others:
As many as three (3) awards, consisting of a framed certificate, may be presented in a given year.
No award may be given if there is not a suitable nomination.
An award may be given in each the following categories:
The Chair of the Board shall present the award(s) at the Board of Governors’ Annual General Meeting or some other prestigious event. Each year the recipient(s) will have their name(s) added to a permanent Roll of Honour which will be maintained in an appropriate place on campus. Information on the recipient(s) will be submitted on an annual basis to Folio, the Edmonton Journal, the Edmonton Sun and other media.
Nominees not chosen for the award in a given year could be considered if renominated in a subsequent year.

Deadline: Nominations may be submitted throughout the year, but in order to be eligible for the current year, nominations must be received by 9 May of that year.
Each nomination must be submitted on an official Board of Governors’ Award of Distinction nomination form (available from the Board of Governors’ office and the Board of Governors’ Award of Distinction web-site) and signed by two nominators. The nomination must include:
Anyone, including students, staff, alumni or members of the public who have worked in a volunteer capacity with the nominee, may make a nomination. The call for nominations will be advertised in appropriate media.
Nomination forms and supporting documents for those nominees not chosen for the award may be destroyed one year after the award presentation at the Annual General Meeting.
