On those rare moments when I'm not focusing on my academic life, I like to indulge in the other things in my life that bring me joy.
Sci-Fi & Fantasy
I love to grow, pick, cook, and eat food. I have accumulated a large amount of culinary knowledge over the years. I enjoy hosting my friends and family for tasty meals and experiment with new ingredients and techniques. I am passionate about local cuisine, homemade everything, and ethical food production practices. Farmer's markets and my kitchen are two of my happy places.
I now have a large garden where I can plant and grow all sorts of delicious veggies to feed my family and my friends..
My family, including my husband, daughter, two cats (Gallifrey and Vastra), and a big, white, enthusiastic dog named Oswin, are central to my health and happiness. I try to model a good work-life balance for my students by only answering emails during work hours so I can spend time with my family. I am seldom happier than when we are all snuggled on the couch, with my kitties grooming each other on my lap.
I enjoy watching sports, especially hockey. I'm a huge fan of the Vancouver Canucks. I also follow tennis and football, both CFL and NFL. I don't play sports anymore but I love to try new styles of dance, when I have the time and energy.
When I am not reading and writing for academia, I like to read (and occasionally write) as a hobby. I love epic fantasy in particular - it takes me out of this world into another, a process which I find fascinating. I once gave an academic talk on how fantasy worldbuilding is akin to anthropology. I'm also a big fan of all things Star Wars and superhero and my pets are named after Doctor Who, one of my favourite shows of all time.
