ELEMENTS OF CREATIVE DANCE
1) TOOLS
- The BODY, which gives form and structure to the dance.
(Using the body as a tool of expression to link the mind and body is central to choosing this activity as therapy.)
2) MATERIALS
- Props (scarves, streamers, balls, balloon, hoops, parachute, etc.)
- Costumes
(These usually demand action and specify qualities of movement. They vary greatly in texture, weight and the tactile sensations they stimulate [Levy, 1992, p. 43].)
3) EQUIPMENT
- Tape player and a selection of music tapes
- Percussive instruments
(Music and instruments provide varied stimulations to the body by varying the type, intensity and rhythm.)
- Mats and other protective/safety measures
(SAFETY IS CRUCIAL AND SHOULD ALWAYS BE EMPHASIZED)
- Footwear is not needed since creative dance is done barefoot
- Clothing should be loose and comfortable to enable the greatest range of personal movement (Warren & Coaten,1993, p. 60-61)
Dance therapy makes use of objects that the clients are able to relate to. This usually mean that the materials and equipments are cheap, simple and readily available.
4) ENVIRONMENT
- Playing area/ gym/ dance studio/ open area etc. appropriate for the group size and the group's fitness level
- it should be well ventilated, warm and clean
- the condition of the floor is very important; a clean, nonslip surface is imperative
The appropriate facility is easy to find in the community. As well, this would involve the clients to seeking out community services with all the benefits of improved social integration and reduced independence on the institution (creek). Interruptio
ns can be very disturbing so exclusive use during session time is very important. Be aware of any distractions in the space (Payne, 1990).
