Postdoctoral Fellowship in

Spatial Analysis and Health

Charting the Foodscape: Dietary Options and Food Imagery in Edmonton Communities is a SSHRC, GEOide, and CIHR funded research program focussing on accessibility to healthy foods and local food retail environments in Edmonton within the context of the environmental factors affecting health and well-being. The program is based in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, in partnership with the Centre for Health Promotion Studies and the Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation. The three-year grant involves spatial analysis of grocery store and fast food locations and accessibility within Edmonton, exploration of the ‘food desert' hypothesis, and design of an interactive, multi-media website of research findings. The project's multi-faceted approach crosses many disciplines including urban and health geography, spatial analysis, cartography, nutrition, physical activity, and public health.

Applications are invited from recent PhD graduates for this one to two year negotiable position. The salary range is $35,000 - $45,000 per annum. Applicants will have demonstrated experience in spatial analysis and GIS applications, an excellent academic record, a beginning record of publication, an understanding of health geography, and a research program development plan that would be highly competitive in provincial and national funding competitions for post-doctoral awards.

The postdoctoral fellow will function as a junior investigator and research coordinator for the project, participating fully in research and related scholarly activities. The successful applicant is required to coordinate a diverse research group of faculty, graduate, and undergraduate students; participate in the training and mentorship of student trainees; work closely and cooperatively with staff; assume leadership responsibilities; and complete research projects. The successful applicant will undertake other research responsibilities related to geography, nutrition, physical activity, and health.

Interested applicants from geography, computing science, spatial analysis/GIS, public health, epidemiology, or related backgrounds should electronically submit an application consisting of MS Word or pdf files containing:

  • a cover letter stating qualifications and experience
